Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder facts

One of the more common mental disorders found in humans is Borderline personality disorder. This syndrome occurs in about 2% of population. Because it is common, and the symptoms also don’t appear very abnormal, it is  difficult to spot this disorder. Often we tend to confuse symptomatic behavior with the person's attitude making  diagnosis difficult. Some people also feel that the disorder itself is controversial because of the difficulty of diagnosis.

Symptoms of  borderline personality disorder?

Some symptoms are similar to those of bipolar. Those with the disorder can behave very strangely at times and they may exhibit some patterns in their behavior. People with BPD have difficulty in controlling and regulating their emotions. They tend to show emotions in public places making them feel very awkward and embarrassed. They often get very frustrated on minor issues. As they fail to control their emotions their attitude becomes a problem for other people around them. Because of this problem, they are not  liked by many people, and generally don't do well socially.

Another problem for those with borderline personality disorder is that they have their own perceptions which very often turn out to be misperceptions to others. So when they try to express something they don't do it very well and causes them to appear abnormal when compared to normal individuals. It also provides a stumbling block to smooth communications in public which further compromises their socializing experiences.

This attitude is often misconstrued as some delusional problem or disorder. However, this is very often due to their intense emotions from inside that are always overflowing and they over shade their normal functioning. This is also the very reason why people with BPD can be very good at studies and are often high achievers in top positions at work. However they are not so good at maintaining relationships and very often fail in family life.

Another problem area is the inability to express their feelings to others which leads to them harboring  fears like the fear of being abandoned. Because they are consistently bad in maintaining good relations with people close friends are few and far between and relations often perceive them as crazy.

One of the most important features that are observed in people with this disorder is that they see the world in two extremes; they either love the person they meet or hate them. Most are also very crazy about love. They always want to be with someone and hate the thought of being alone. Most of the times they try to get into a relationship as soon as possible and establish intimacy very quickly to make them feel secure.

This disorder is treatable by both medication and therapy.  Antidepressant and SSRI’s are used to recover from the situation.
